Solar Business Trends in South Africa: A Bright Future Amidst Energy Challenges

Introduction

South Africa’s solar energy sector is undergoing rapid transformation, emerging as one of the most dynamic segments of the country’s broader energy landscape. As the nation grapples with persistent electricity supply issues and rising grid costs, businesses and households alike are increasingly turning to solar power — not just for sustainability goals, but for economic survival and energy independence.

The growth of solar in South Africa has been impressive. By late 2024, total solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity reached nearly 9 GW, representing almost 12 % year-on-year growth. A significant portion of this expansion stems from private sector investments, which contributed around 6.1 GW of capacity, while public procurement programs added 2.8 GW

Private solar installations have proliferated despite regulatory and grid challenges, with hundreds of megawatts under construction and more scheduled to come online in 2025 — signaling ongoing investor confidence.

Solar adoption varies across provinces, with Gauteng, Western Cape, and Mpumalanga leading installations due to industrial demand and favorable climates. However, the market is becoming more nationwide in scope as installers and service providers expand their reach.

Commercial and industrial (C&I) sectors now dominate the market, driven by the need to control operational costs and pursue corporate sustainability commitments.

The South African solar industry is also seeing innovative business models that lower barriers to entry:

  • Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): Allowing customers to buy solar energy without major upfront costs. 
  • Solar leasing and Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG): Making solar systems more affordable especially for smaller businesses and lower-income segments. 
  • Energy trading platforms: Enabling peer-to-peer energy sales and new revenue streams. 

These models are expanding access to solar energy and diversifying revenue potential across the value chain.

The integration of battery storage systems with PV installations is another big trend. As lithium-ion battery prices decline, more consumers and businesses are pairing storage with solar generation — ensuring continuity during grid outages and optimizing daytime generation for evening use.

This hybrid approach not only enhances system reliability but also strengthens the financial case for solar investments in a country where load-shedding has historically been a major concern.
